This Is More Than Art — It’s Access
This isn’t just a space to make art—it’s a movement to make it accessible.
At AuRTistic Expressions, we believe everyone deserves the chance to create, explore, and heal through art, especially those in disable and neurodivergent communities who are too often left out of the conversation.
We’re building a community that uplifts, advocates, and creates together by:
Raising awareness about the power of art therapy through stories and education
Sharing access to art supplies and spaces through donation drives and local partnerships
Providing support, resources, and real talk—no judgement, no gatekeeping
Because art isn’t just for the ‘talented’ or the ‘able-bodied’. It’s for you. For us. For everyone who needs it.

Frida Kahlo
I decided to do something a bit different this month and feature one of the artists who inspired the idea for this website and whose story inspires me daily, Frida Kahlo. Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a Mexican artist who transformed personal pain into revolutionary art.
Born to a German father and mestiza mother, Frida spent her life at La Casa Azul, painting herself because she was "often alone" and was "the subject I know best." A devastating bus accident at 18 confined her to bed, where she began creating the self-portraits that would make her legendary.
Using a mirror placed above her easel, Frida painted her reality without filter – the physical pain, the political passion, the complex identity of a disabled woman in a world that preferred to look away. Her work mixed Mexican folk art with surrealist elements, creating a visual language that spoke truth about bodies, politics, and what it means to survive.
From her bedroom studio to galleries in New York and Paris, she refused to soften her vision or make her art more palatable. She painted until the end, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists who find power in portraying themselves exactly as they are.
Read more about why I named my dog Magdalene after this fierce artist and what her story means to disabled creators in the blog.

Howdy! I’m Gal
I’m a late-diagnosed autistic who was in complete burnout and terrified of what the next part of my life would look like. Welcome to 50! Rather than living up to Einstein’s definition of insanity, I decided to create my future.
No more trying to imitate the typicals (and failing dismally every.single.time). No more resumes. No more corporate gaslighting. No more performance punishment. No more shrinking myself to soothe the superior’s egos. No more typical anything, because I’m nowhere near typical.
I have had two constants in my life: AuRT (heretofore called art) and a heart for helping others. I’m weird and quirky, sarcastic and quick-witted, and sometimes unintentionally offensive. I overexplain, use lots and lots of parentheses, and have my own words for nearly everything. I’m a champion of the underdog, and few things make me happier than helping and watching them succeed.
I hope you’ll tag along on this future that I’m creating. I’m cheering for you, and I hope you’ll cheer me on, too!
