The Importance of AI Usage Policies

Perhaps I’m later to the game than I realize.

Perhaps my ND warped sense of time is the reason.

Perhaps I just haven’t stumbled upon too much talk about the need for this, for ALL businesses.

It seems like one day I was watching ‘I, Robot,’ and the next AI is EVERYWHERE and everyone is talking about it, except this.

Regardless, I believe it’s time to establish a transparent, honest, ethical AI policy for myself and my business.

The importance of maintaining honesty, integrity, and transparency is supremely important, especially when working with individuals who trust us with their time and attention. In a world where AI can increasingly mimic human creativity, I believe we need clear boundaries about where technology supports our work and where genuine human experience must remain central.

I have no problem using and sharing that I do and will use AI for administrative tasks and to increase efficiency in some areas (even though I did write a piece on Medium that I wouldn’t because it scares me, but I digress.)

Anyway, in case you were wondering, that’s how I spent my Saturday. Good times. Good times.

Below is my current policy (that will be strictly adhered to and reviewed regularly) for all the world to see.

This policy will also be linked on the site footer...once I figure out how to get the link to work. IYKYK.

Final thought, I encourage everyone to hold not only themselves accountable to honesty, transparency, and integrity in all areas, but hold others accountable as well.

AI Usage Policy

Introduction

This policy outlines how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are used within my personal brand and company operations. I believe in maintaining ethical boundaries while leveraging AI capabilities to refine certain aspects of my work. This document reflects my commitment to transparency with my audience and establishes clear boundaries around AI use.

Our Philosophy on AI

I view AI as a tool to expand human creativity and efficiency, but not replace human connection and expression. AI should enhance my work without diluting my unique voice or compromising the trust my audience places in me. This policy ensures that my use of AI aligns with these values.

Permitted AI Uses

I currently use AI technologies in the following limited capacities:

  • Brainstorming & Ideation: AI may be used to generate initial ideas, suggest themes, or expand on concepts that I then develop with my own expertise and perspective.

  • Caption Assistance: AI may help draft or suggest social media captions that I then review, modify, and approve/rewrite before publishing.

  • Editorial Support: AI (specifically Grammarly) may assist with proofreading, grammar checking, or suggesting minor edits to content I have created.

  • Research Facilitation: AI may help gather information, summarize background materials, or identify relevant resources that inform my content. This research is then double-checked through other sources to ensure accuracy and relevance.

  • Administrative Tasks: AI may be used for scheduling, organizing information, or other behind-the-scenes operational functions.

Boundaries and Limitations

I commit to NOT using AI in the following ways:

  • Content Creation: AI will never fully create content that represents my personal voice, expertise, or opinions. All substantive content reflects my own thoughts, experiences, and knowledge and is written by me.

  • Audience Interaction: AI will never engage with my audience while pretending to be me. All personal communications come directly from me.

  • Decision Making: AI will not make business or creative decisions on my behalf. While AI may provide suggestions, all final decisions are made by me.

  • Unacknowledged Content: Any significant AI contribution to public-facing content will be appropriately disclosed according to the framework below.

Disclosure Framework

I am committed to appropriate transparency regarding AI use:

  • Direct Disclosure: When AI has played a meaningful role in generating or shaping content beyond minor edits or suggestions, I will include a disclosure note appropriate to the platform.

  • Platform-Specific Approaches:

    • Long-form content: Disclosure will appear at the beginning or end of the content

    • Social media: When appropriate, captions will include brief acknowledgment (e.g., #AIassisted)

    • Visual content: Disclosure will be included in captions or embedded in the content as appropriate

  • Levels of Disclosure:

    • Minimal AI assistance (proofreading, minor edits): No disclosure needed

    • Moderate AI assistance (caption suggestions, format structuring): Brief acknowledgment when appropriate

    • Significant AI input (extensive brainstorming, research synthesis): Clear disclosure included

Accountability and Updates

To ensure adherence to this policy:

  • I will regularly review my AI usage practices to ensure they align with this policy

  • This policy will be updated as AI technology evolves and as best practices for ethical AI use develop

  • I welcome feedback on this policy and my implementation of it
